The centre was started in 1897 by Swami Ramakrishnananda (a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna).
Activities :
- Publication of books: 42 new and 318 reprints were brought out during the year.
- Publication of three monthly journals: The Vedanta Kesari (English, 92nd year), Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam (Tamil, 85th year), and Sri Ramakrishna Prabha (Telugu, 62nd year).
- A girls' high school with 661 pupils.
- A primary school with 637 pupils.
- A library with a children's section, having 29,832 books (12,449 issued this year) and 250 periodicals.
- Moral, cultural, and religious programmes for children and youths in the Math..
- Weekly moral and educational classes for about 100 children in a backward area.
- A charitable allopathic-cum-homoeopathic dispensary with dental, eye, ENT, surgical, X-ray, ultrasound scanning, paediatrics, ECG, gynaecology, physiotherapy and laboratory sections, and clinics for TB and diabetes. 2,72,241 cases (new 1,10,170) were treated.
- A weekly mobile dispensary, which treated 14,776 cases.
- Daily worship of Sri Ramakrishna, fortnightly Ramnam Sankirtan, daily religious classes, weekly discourses and celebration of the birthdays of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, Swami Vivekananda and other spiritual celebrities, as also other festivals.
- An exhibition and youth programmes at Vivekanander Illam (Kamarajar Salai, Triplicane, Chennai – 600005), where Swamiji stayed for nine days on his return from the West in 1897.
