The ashrama was founded in 1899 under the inspiration of Swami Vivekananda. Situated in the solitude of deep Himalayan forests, it commands a magnificent view of the snow range covering some 380 km in length.
Activities :
- Editing of Prabuddha Bharata or Awakened India, an English monthly, founded by Swami Vivekananda.
- A library with 12,327 books.
- A 25-bed charitable hospital which treated 306 inpatients and 70,630 outpatients (new 7724) this year.
- A guesthouse which provides an opportunity for spiritual culture to a limited number of aspirants.
- Dairy and agriculture farming on a moderate scale.
Activities of Kolkata branch:
- Publication of books, mainly in English: 11 new and 106 reprints this year.
- Publication of the English monthly, Prabuddha Bharata (109-110th year).
- A library and a reading room with 23,835 books (10,214 issued this year), and 99 newspapers and periodicals.
- Religious classes and public lectures in the premises and outside, and a weekly study circle.
- Fortnightly distribution of foodstuff, clothes, and so on to 960 persons; and monetary help to different institutions, amounting to Rs. 3,76,950 during the year.
