Started in 1943 in North Kolkata and later shifted to Narendrapur, this ashrama runs many institutions.
Activities :
- A residential degree college offering honours courses in arts and science subjects, with 421 students (108 enjoyed concession). Its higher secondary unit had 230 students (33 enjoyed concession). It has one NCC and two NSS units.
- A residential secondary school with 772 students. Considered by the Government of India as a model school, it has two media of instruction: English and Bengali. 62 students enjoyed concession this year. It has two Boys' Scout units and two NCC units.
- A non-residential primary school with 531 students.
- The Lokasiksha Parishad (an institute for social welfare and integrated rural development), which organizes rural development work through 259 youth organizations and 12 district level organizations, runs the following:
- An agricultural training centre, which trained 74 Krishi Prayukti Sahayaks and 1267 in agri-equipment mechanics.
- One national level resource centre, which trained 225 NSS Programme Officers and all NYK Co-ordinators of east and north-east districts.
- An adult night school, a State Open School, non-formal education centres, an adult education centre, community learning centres, child labour schools, etc, which, through 41 centres, helped 1775 students.
- Child development work through crèches, pre-primary education, anganwadis, balawadis, coaching centres, etc, in 408 centres for 28,555 children.
- Preventive and curative health care to aid 6048 mothers and 11,409 children.
- Physical and cultural development through chalaman vahini, involving 13,151 children.
- Vocational and skill development training through 145 courses, benefiting 4009 trainees.
- Sanitation and drinking water projects in 10 districts of West Bengal through which 2,22,782 low-cost latrines were built and arsenic testing and removal filters were provided in 1690 villages.
- Running units for development of alternative energy through 1332 solar systems, 285 bio-gas plants and 1000 improved chullahs.
- Agricultural extension, joint forest management, Sunderban development programme, animal husbandry project, and different economic development activities benefiting 6821 families.
- Running an audio-visual unit, a village library, an anganwadi training centre, dairy and poultry extension work, a soil testing laboratory, a veterinary clinic, etc, publication of books and journals on rural development, non-formal education and child education, publication of the Bengali monthly Samaj Siksha (48th year).
- The residential blind boys' academy with its Braille press (meeting the needs of the eastern and north-eastern states) and library, offering general education as well as training in music, agriculture and several crafts, had 180 boys, all of whom received substantial financial assistance. The academy also trains blind and sighted teachers.
- A department of technical and vocational education having the following units: (a) a junior technical school with 226 students, (b) an automobile training centre with 102 trainees, and (c) a commercial institute offering shorthand, typewriting, Spoken English and computer courses, which trained 323 students this year.
- A central library with 66,356 books (12,914 issued) and 62 journals.
- A museum on Environment and Man.
- An arboretum of medicinal plants.
- An allopathic dispensary, which treated 1,16,350 patients.
- The centre spent Rs. 49,14,238 towards scholarships for students and Rs. 12,54,198 as pecuniary help to poor and needy people of the locality this year.
- Religious activities : Celebration of the birthdays of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother, and Swami Vivekananda, and also Kali Puja.
- The Vivekananda Social Welfare Centre, meant mainly for the Harijans living in the slums of Rambagan in northern Kolkata, which runs the following :
- Two junior basic schools with 22 pupils.
- Four charitable dispensaries, which treated 20,076 cases.
- A vocational training centre with 155 trainees
- Coaching classes for students.
- A library with 850 books.
- A hostel (at Narendrapur) for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe boys, with 130 students.
- A slum re-housing project is in progress at Rambagan under which construction of 19 of the proposed 20 blocks has been completed.
